ok. now, i'm over the high. wanna talk about a news article i came across on the newpaper today, the speak up corner by Santokh Singh.

Exam grouses: Learn to cope and move on.

PSLE. god. i cannot imagine how kiasu parents are. its really stupid and infuriating. they complain about the PSLE to MOE. and they werent the ones who did the paper, nor did they see it. at all. some examples:

1992 maths: parents call up MOE to complain about the paper. students say the paper was harder than the practice papers.

HELLO?!? isnt it supposed to be this way. if its easy then its a bonus right?

2000, maths:at least 26 parents call straits time to complain that the paper required students to apply high order thinking skills which their kids were not trained to do so.

AGAIN, hello?!? if ur kids cant do it then shldnt u be the one to reflect? of the thousands of parents whose kids took PSLE tat year, only 1 tiny fraction complain?

2004 (MY YEAR), science: kids came out crying, too many lenghty thinking skills question. paper was "murder".

ERM, I DUN TINK SO. its manageable. y blame the world when u can only blame youself?why is tat for my year still got ppl score A* ?? REFLECTION TIME!

2005,2006,2007: same old subjects, same old complaints

WHAT CAN I SAY?

if everyone can answer all the questions correctly, then wouldnt the paper be useless? crap right/ its only when some ppl can do it and some ppl cannot then u will see the diff. only then will the "paper be a truly fair and good instrument". parents ought to be more understanding right? this is outrageous.

its understandable that parents want their children to be the best. but IF EVERYONE ONE IS EQUALLY GOOD, THEN WHERE GOT SUCH THINGS AS NICHE AREA? everyone is good at something, but not the same thing. some more skilled at academics, some at sports, others in the arts. some a bit of everything, some more technical.

let's just say that parents of singaporean students are pampering their kids too much. kids say paper hard, shldnt it be the kids who get nagged at and tutored? rather than complaining to MOE? they shld reflect and think: why is that other kids can do it and my kid cant, mayb he/she is better at other areas?

and teachers really try their very very best. REALLY. dun believe? i'll bring out an example:

Teachers in spore vs Teachers in shanghai.

our teachers:
- teach students
- after school supp class(FREE)
- look after child's well being
- endure complains from parents
- stay back after lessons to prep materials for class (OWN FREE WILL)

teachers in Shanghai:
-teach a fixed number of periods a day. max 4.
- teach only one subject
- conduct supp classes at a COST. $150/subject

see the diff? so our teachers definitely the respect for all the efforts that they put into this noble profession. so parents, OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK. they dont only have to teach your child. they also have to each everyone elses' children. so APPRECIATE THEM.

DUN MAKE THE WORLD CHANGE TO FIT YOU. CHANGE YOURSELF TO FIT THE WORLD. or be neglected or left behind.

believe me, i was a P6 student once. and i survived isnt it? afterall, its me who went through the paper in 2004. marks are always moderated. every year there'll b a fixed amount of A* and As and Bs and Cs. take it in your stride!
