everyday, i seem to read about disturbing news on the internet, about the enviroment, global warming, extinction, and war. either one of them, or a few of them. todae, i revisited a blog, http://www.riverbendblog.blogspot.com, written by an iraqi woman, living in baghdad. the updates are not so frequent, but it realli gives ppl an insight about how life REALLI IS IN IRAQ, where the war is goin on. and not reading about something the news report cook up or spins into.
its so scary, and disturbing. the world is changing... alot. and not everyone knows what is going on.
"I remember Baghdad before the war- one could live anywhere. We didn't know what our neighbors were- we didn't care. No one asked about religion or sect. No one bothered with what was considered a trivial topic: are you Sunni or Shia? You only asked something like that if you were uncouth and backward. Our lives revolve around it now. Our existence depends on hiding it or highlighting it- depending on the group of masked men who stop you or raid your home in the middle of the night."
one paragraph that she wrote. the world was once safe, once ours, once everybody elses' to love and to protect. to call home. but now? terror. fear. uncertainity. mystery. no one knows what will happen the next day.
"The problem is that we don't even know if we'll ever see this stuff again. We don't know if whatever we leave, including the house, will be available when and if we come back. There are moments when the injustice of having to leave your country, simply because an imbecile got it into his head to invade it, is overwhelming. It is unfair that in order to survive and live normally, we have to leave our home and what remains of family and friends… And to what? It's difficult to decide which is more frightening- car bombs and militias, or having to leave everything you know and love, to some unspecified place for a future where nothing is certain. "
here, they decided to leave the iraq. but to where? for what? it is so unfair. its their country, their home, their lives, and they have to leave it all behind because their homeland was invaded. but foreigners. ppl who they had no connection with. i wouldnt wanna leave singapore, not permanently. its where i belong, my friends, my life, my family. and everything i love. and will miss. why should i be forced to gie it all up? because of others?
it isnt fair and never will b. look at this. the americans are debating whether they won or lost. but does it matter? the iraqi commoners lost far more than what money could ever pay for. their future( now bleak), their friends and family (some killed, some seeking refugee), their trust in this world, their hope for a stable and peaceful life.
this world is not warm. enough. despite the global warming. and no thermometer could ever measure the warmth, and nothing is comparable to the suffering ppl go through...
